Congratulations to the winner of our $1,000 High School Scholarship, Yemaya Bruce, a
2026 graduate of Mission Bay High School and incoming freshman at UC San Diego.
Yemaya enters college with an extraordinary record of academic excellence, earning a 4.76 GPA
while completing the rigorous International Baccalaureate and Honors curriculum, in addition to
successfully completing college-level coursework.
Her passion for medicine and global health has already taken her far beyond the classroom.
Through global health experiences in Vietnam and the Dominican Republic, Yemaya gained firsthand
exposure to maternal health, integrative medicine, health disparities, and the challenges underserved
communities face in accessing quality care.
Mentor Me Galore • Mentor • Empower • Elevate
She has also conducted research examining fertility and infant mortality rates in developing countries
and contributed to public health initiatives through San Diego County, including work promoting RSV
vaccination and infectious disease prevention.
Yemaya is equally impressive as a leader and servant.
She serves as President of Key Club, co-founded Mediums of Mental Health, an organization that has
reached more than 500 people, and has taught swimming to more than 300 children, including
developing individualized lessons for neurodiverse youth and children with disabilities.
She is also fluent in Mandarin, proficient in Russian, and has balanced these accomplishments with
employment and service—even working three jobs during a period of financial hardship for her family.
Yemaya aspires to become a pediatrician and pursue global health, combining science, advocacy,
culture, and service to improve healthcare for children and underserved communities around the
world.
Yemaya, congratulations on receiving our $1,000 High School Scholarship.
Your academic excellence, resilience, leadership, compassion, and commitment to making healthcare
accessible across communities and cultures make you an exceptional and incredibly deserving
recipient.

Congratulations to our winner of $1,000, Kyla Barnes, whose accomplishments
demonstrate an incredible commitment to academic excellence, leadership, service, and medicine.
Kyla is a Biology major at Howard University, minoring in Chemistry and Psychology, with an
impressive 3.8 GPA.
She has distinguished herself through numerous leadership roles, including serving as Special
Projects Chair for the Howard University Undergraduate Assembly, an Events Chair for Ladies of the
Quad, and on the Executive Board Special Events Team for Howard’s Chicago People’s Union.
Her commitment to her community is just as remarkable.
Kyla founded a youth mentoring program, organized a winter essentials drive collecting more than
100 items for Chicago homeless shelters, and created #BeyondDaCut, an initiative providing free
haircuts while creating meaningful conversations around mental health, particularly among Black
men.
She has also pursued hands-on healthcare experiences through the UIC Health Careers Pathway
Program and presented research at Howard University’s annual Biology Research Symposium.
Inspired by growing up on Chicago’s South Side and witnessing healthcare disparities firsthand, Kyla
aspires to become a physician and conduct biomedical research focused on improving Black
women’s health.
What makes Kyla especially deserving of this recognition is that her accomplishments are driven by a
larger purpose: to make medicine more equitable, more representative, and more accessible for the
communities that have historically been overlooked.
Congratulations, Kyla, on this incredibly well-deserved achievement.

Congratulations to the recipient of our $1,000 Medical School Scholarship, Aerlande
Mekebeb Negerie, who will be attending Michigan State University College of Human Medicine.
Aerlande graduated from Michigan State University with degrees in Human Biology and Psychology
and an exceptional 3.98 GPA, earning Dean’s List honors for four semesters.
Her journey toward medicine has been defined by leadership, research, clinical experience, and an
extraordinary commitment to service.
She has served as Vice President of Aspiring Black Woman Doctors, founded and led MSU’s Global
Public Health Brigades chapter, conducted public health and medical education research, and gained
hands-on experience as a patient safety sitter, phlebotomist, crisis counselor, and hospital volunteer
both in the United States and South Africa.
Her commitment to others extends even further through service with homeless shelters, hospice
patients, children, and individuals with disabilities.
Aerlande’s passion for medicine began with caring for her grandmother and grew as she witnessed
her mother, an ophthalmologist, restore sight to patients in rural South Africa.
Those experiences shaped her desire to become a pediatrician serving underserved communities in
the United States and globally, while advocating for greater healthcare equity and inspiring more
Black and POC girls to see themselves represented in medicine.
What stands out about Aerlande is her understanding that medicine is not simply about treating
illness—it is about restoring dignity, expanding access, advocating for those who are underserved,
and ensuring that every patient feels seen.
Aerlande, congratulations on receiving our $1,000 Medical School Scholarship.
Your academic excellence, compassion, leadership, and dedication to equitable healthcare make you
incredibly deserving of this investment in your journey to becoming a physician.

Congratulations to our First Runner-Up and recipient of a $500 High School
Scholarship, Melanie Hanciles, a graduate of Oxon Hill High School and rising freshman at the
University of Maryland, College Park, Class of 2030.
Melanie graduated with an outstanding 4.37 GPA while pursuing a rigorous Science and Technology
curriculum with Honors and AP coursework.
Her passion for science is already reflected in an impressive research background, including
conducting college-level research at the University of Maryland and serving as an invasive plant
research intern with the Accokeek Foundation, where she gained experience in scientific research,
data analysis, and presenting her findings.
Beyond academics, Melanie has demonstrated meaningful leadership as Secretary and Co-Founder
of her school’s African Student Association, Historian for Mu Alpha Theta, and a member of
organizations including HOSA and NSTEM, while also consistently serving families in her community
through her church’s Bread Ministry.
Melanie’s desire to become a physician is also deeply personal.
Her own experiences struggling with acne taught her how profoundly a medical condition can affect a
young person’s confidence and, more importantly, how much it matters for patients to feel heard and
understood by their physicians.
After finally experiencing that sense of connection with a Black dermatologist, Melanie found
inspiration in both the power of compassionate care and the importance of representation in
medicine.
She now aspires to become a dermatologist, combining research with patient care to improve
treatment for adolescents, patients of color, and underserved communities—and ultimately becoming
the kind of physician she once needed herself.
Melanie, congratulations on being named our First Runner-Up and receiving this $500 High School
Scholarship.
Your academic excellence, curiosity, leadership, service, and commitment to ensuring that every
patient feels seen and heard make you incredibly deserving of this recognition.

It is my pleasure to congratulate our First Runner-Up and recipient of a $500 award, Derrick Williams,
whose accomplishments reflect an outstanding commitment to academic excellence, leadership,
healthcare advocacy, and service.
Derrick is a Health Sciences major at Howard University with an impressive 3.8 college GPA, building
upon a 4.17 high school GPA and graduating in the top 10% of his class.
His leadership is equally impressive: Derrick serves as Vice President of Howard’s First Year
Association, previously served as President of his high school’s Health Information Program, and co-
founded the STEM-Thesis Club.
As President of the Health Information Program, he trained and mentored 20 student educators and
helped bring health education on topics such as disease prevention, mental health, and nutrition to
more than 200 students.
His commitment to community also includes mentoring over 100 at-risk youth through the Kids
Against Violence Initiative and advocating for student health and wellness at Howard.
Derrick’s passion for medicine is deeply personal.
Inspired by watching his grandmother in St.
Vincent rely on home remedies when healthcare was inaccessible, he became determined to address
disparities in access and representation.
Derrick aspires to become a physician who challenges stereotypes surrounding Black men in
medicine, serves communities like his own, and inspires other young Black and Caribbean men to
see themselves in healthcare.
Derrick, congratulations on being named our First Runner-Up and receiving this $500 award.
Your academic excellence, leadership, service, and determination to break barriers in medicine make
this recognition incredibly well deserved.

It is my honor to congratulate our First Runner-Up and recipient of a $500 Medical School
Scholarship, Myles Holloway, who will be attending Ross University School of Medicine.
Myles’s journey to medicine is a remarkable story of resilience, academic excellence, and
determination.
Growing up in South Central Los Angeles, he witnessed firsthand the effects of poverty, limited
healthcare access, and health disparities, experiences that ultimately strengthened his commitment to
becoming a physician and serving communities like his own.
Myles graduated Magna Cum Laude from California State University, Sacramento with a 3.8 GPA,
completing his degree in Exercise Science in just three and a half years while working part-time, and
later earned his Master of Public Health from Florida International University, where he received the
Dean’s Excellence Award for exceptional academic achievement.
His impressive experience spans direct patient care as a rehabilitation technician, managed care with
the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, and public health research with the UC Davis Centers for Violence
Prevention.
His excellence has also been recognized through numerous honors, including the Faculty
Endowment Scholarship, the Dr.
Ludlow & Ruth Creary Family Scholarship through the National Medical Fellowships, the Frederick M.
Roberts College Scholarship, and the Above and Beyond Award.
Myles’s personal statement reminds us that his path has not always been easy, but he has
consistently turned obstacles and doubt into motivation.
He now hopes to use his education in medicine, public health, and healthcare policy to become a
physician who advocates for patients and expands access to care in underserved communities.
Myles, congratulations on being named our First Runner-Up and receiving this $500 Medical School
Scholarship.
Your resilience, academic excellence, compassion, and commitment to serving others make this
recognition incredibly well deserved, and we are excited to see you take this next step toward
becoming a physician.

Congratulations to our Second Runner-Up and recipient of a $250 High School Scholarship, Desirae Rice, a graduate of Newburgh Free Academy and incoming freshman at North Carolina Central University, Class of 2030. Desirae graduated with an outstanding 4.0 GPA, earning an Advanced Regents Diploma while
balancing AP and college-level coursework with an exceptional record as a two-sport student-athlete. She served as Captain of her Varsity Girls Flag Football team, earning Defensive Player of the Season honors, competed in Varsity Basketball, and captained an AAU basketball team that achieved an impressive 17 tournament championships. Desirae’s leadership extends well beyond athletics. She is a National Honor Society member, a recipient of the Sojourner Truth Award in Mathematics, a peer math tutor, and has served in multiple youth leadership and community advocacy roles. Her passion for medicine has been especially shaped by her work as a Youth Health Promoter, where she has educated and advocated for young people on mental health, healthy relationships, health
equity, consent, and access to healthcare. Through those conversations, Desirae recognized how many young people silently struggle with
anxiety, depression, trauma, and other emotional challenges—and discovered her calling to become a psychiatrist.
At North Carolina Central University, she plans to major in Psychology while completing her pre-medical requirements, with the ultimate goal of providing compassionate psychiatric care, reducing the stigma surrounding mental health, and serving underserved communities. As a young Black woman pursuing medicine, she also hopes to mentor the next generation and show
other underrepresented students that they belong in healthcare. Desirae, congratulations on being named our Second Runner-Up and receiving this $250 High School
Scholarship. Your academic excellence, athletic discipline, leadership, advocacy, and genuine commitment to helping others feel seen, heard, and cared for make you incredibly deserving of this recognition.

Congratulations to our Second Runner-Up and recipient of a $250 award, Jomei
Richard, whose accomplishments demonstrate an outstanding commitment to academic excellence,
athletics, service, leadership, and his future in medicine.
Jomei is a Kinesiology student at Morehouse College pursuing studies in business and entrepreneurship while maintaining an impressive 3.7 GPA and earning recognition on both the Dean’s List and President’s List. As a varsity Track & Field athlete and two-time Conference Champion, Jomei has demonstrated the discipline required to excel both academically and athletically. His passion for healthcare extends beyond the classroom, with more than 50 hours of physical therapy and sports performance shadowing, where he has gained firsthand exposure to rehabilitation, injury prevention, and patient-centered care.
Jomei is also deeply committed to serving others, completing nearly 500 hours of community service, mentoring underserved youth, supporting individuals experiencing homelessness, volunteering with Special Olympics, and serving as a Community Coordinator with Destined for Greatness. Inspired by watching his mother overcome months of pain through care that focused on the body as a
whole, Jomei aspires to become an osteopathic physician and ultimately establish holistic clinics in communities where quality healthcare is too often inaccessible. His experiences as an athlete, mentor, lifeguard, and community servant have shaped his belief that medicine requires not only knowledge, but compassion, prevention, and the ability to act when others
are counting on you. Jomei, congratulations on being named our Second Runner-Up and receiving this $250 award. Your discipline, service, leadership, and vision for making holistic healthcare more accessible make
this recognition truly well deserved.
